How to Root Galaxy Note N7000 on Android 4 1 2 XXLT9 Jelly Bean Firmware

United Kingdom / Ireland owners of the Samsung Galaxy Note (GT-N7000) has started receiving its latest Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update with firmware build number N7000XXLT9. The new official firmware is currently available as an Over-The-Air (OTA) update as well as through Samsung KIES.

Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 users who have already updated their devices with Android 4.1.2 XXLT9 Jelly Bean, may root their devices using the tutorial below.

Disclaimer: Rooting voids the warranty of your device. We and the developer of this rooting procedures shall not be held responsible if any undesirable outcomes may happen to your device. use of this root guide is solely at your own risk!

Pre-requisites
1. Install USB Driver for Samsung Galaxy Note on the computer.
2. Enable USB Debugging Mode on the phone by navigating to Settings >> Developer Options.
3. Make a backup of all your important data before following the guide.
4. The Galaxy Note should be factory unlocked and not locked to any particular carrier.
5. Ensure the battery of the phone is charged more than 80 per cent.
6. The Android 4.1.2 XXLT9 Jelly Bean firmware is compatible only with Samsung Galaxy Note N7000. Applying this to any incorrect variant might brick the device. Verify the model number of the Galaxy Note by navigating to Settings >> About Phone.

METHOD 1 - Root via Stock Recovery

1. PhilZ-cwm6-XXLT9-ORA-5.08.5-signed.zip

Steps to Root Galaxy Note N7000 Running on Android 4.1.2 XXLT9 Jelly Bean using Stock Recovery
Step 1: Connect the Galaxy Note to the computer using USB cable.
Step 2: Copy the PhilZ-cwm6-XXLT9-ORA-5.08.5-signed.zip file to external SD card of your phone.
Step 3: Once the file transfer process is completed, switch off the phone and disconnect it from computer.
Step 4: Boot the device into stock recovery by pressing and holding Volume Up, Home, and Power buttons together.
Note: In recovery mode use the Volume keys to toggle between options and Home/Power button to select the desired option.
Step 5: Select apply update from external storage then navigate to the PhilZ-cwm6-XXLT9-ORA-5.08.5-signed.zip which was earlier copied to the SD card and confirm the installation.
Step 6: Once installation process is completed, return to main recovery menu and select Reboot System Now.

Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 should be now rooted successfully on Android 4.1.2 XXLT9 Jelly Bean through stock recovery.

METHOD 2 - Root via Odin

2. Odin 3.07 (Mirror Link)

Steps to Root Galaxy Note 2 N7100 Running on Android 4.1.2 XXLT9 Jelly Bean using Odin
Step 1: Extract Odin 3.07 file using WinRAR/7-Zip/WinZip or any other extracting tool.
Step 2: Switch off the Galaxy Note. Then boot the device into Download Mode by pressing and holding Volume Down, Home and Power buttons together until a construction Android robot icon with a warning triangle appears on screen. Now press the Volume Up button to enter Download Mode.
Step 3: Launch Odin on the computer as an Administrator.
Step 4: Connect the Galaxy Note to the computer using USB cable while it is in the Download Mode. Wait until Odin detects the device. When the device is connected successfully, the ID: COM box will turn blue with the COM port number. Additionally, the successful connected will be indicated by a message saying Added.
Note: If the Added message does not appear, then try re-install USB drivers or changing the port on the computer.
Step 5: In Odin, click the PDA button and select the PhilZ-cwm6-XXLT9-ORA-5.08.5.tar.md5 file.
Step 6: Verify that Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time checkboxes are selected in Odin. Also, ensure the Re-Partition option is not selected.
Step 7: Double-check and click Start in Odin. The installation process will now begin.
Step 8: Once the installation process is completed, your phone will restart and soon you will see a PASS message with green background in the left-most box at the very top of the Odin. You can now unplug the USB cable to disconnect your device from computer.

Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 running on official Android 4.1.2 XXLT9 Jelly Bean firmware is now rooted successfully. You can now install any app that requires root permission. Verify the root status of the device by downloading Root Checker app from Google Play Store.

Samsung has resumed the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update roll out for the international version of the Galaxy S3 bearing model number GT-I9300. The new official firmware is now available as an Over-The-Air (OTA) update as well as through Samsung KIES.

According to SamMobile report, the Android 4.3 XXUGMK6 Jelly Bean update brings a host of bug-fixes and feature enhancements over its previous firmware. Samsung has completely changed the core UI to the one found on the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3, even the setting app has been completely overhauled with a new tabbed interface.

Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300 users who missed the OTA update notification or unable to access the update over Samsung KIES, and those who are residing outside UK can now download and install the same manually, using our step-by-step guide.

Pre-requisites
1. Install USB Drivers for Samsung Galaxy S3 on the computer.
2. Enable USB Debugging Mode on the phone by navigating to Settings >> Developer Options.
3. Make a backup of all your important data before following the guide.
4. The Galaxy S3 should be factory unlocked and not locked to any particular carrier.
5. Ensure the battery of the phone is charged more than 80 percent.

• Click the CSC button and select file with CSC in its name. Ignore if there is no such file.
• Click the PIT button and select the .pit file. Ignore if there is no such file.

Step 8: In Odin, enable Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checkboxes. Also, ensure the Re-Partition checkbox is chosen only if a .pit file was chosen in the previous step.
Step 9: Verify everything suggested in Step 7 and Step 8 is done correctly. Then hit the Start button to begin the installation process.
Step 10: Once the installation process is completed, your phone will restart and soon you will see a PASS message with green background in the left-most box at the very top of the Odin. You can now unplug the USB cable to disconnect your device from the computer.

Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300 should be now updated with official Android 4.3 XXUGMK6 Jelly Bean. Head over to Settings >> About Phone to verify the software version running on the device.

Note: If Galaxy S3 I9300 stuck at booting animation after Step 10 then go to recovery mode (press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power buttons together) and perform Wipe data/Factory Reset and Wipe Cache Partition task before selecting reboot system now function. In recovery mode use Volume keys to navigate between options and Power key to select the option. Please note, performing wiping task will erase your device internal memory data and not external SD card data.

Thoughts Nintendo 3DS

I got a 3DS when it launched last month, because I am a gaming junky and will play pretty much anything.  Heres my thoughts on the hardware itself.


The 3D Effect


I think the 3D effect is pretty cool, and the least eye-straining 3D effect Ive seen.  Ive been on 3D rides at Disneyland, Ive been to 3D movies in the theater, Ive seen 3D from broadcast television and Blu-Rays on brand new TVs, and they all kinda bother me in varying degrees.  The 3DS on the other hand, when held at a typical distance and angle from your face, works really well and I dont generally get the sense that my brain is fighting the illusion.  I personally found the effect to look its best when I turned the 3D slider on the device down to 50% or less though - when the effect is more pronounced it starts to get a little difficult to look at in some games.


All that said, some games dont mix well with the 3D.  Street Fighter 4 is probably the worst offender, because it involves vigorously entering in a series of spastic attack commands in order to succeed.  I found that it was fairly common for my button mashing to knock the angle of the device out of its 3d sweet spot in that game, though with others it was not an issue.


Is it a gimmick?  Yes.  Is it kinda cool?  I think so.  Does it enhance the gaming experience?  Only superficially, but the same could be said of a lot of new hardware generations.  Did adding more texture memory and polygon output to the PS3 make all PS3 games better than their PS2 counterparts?  Of course not.  Too much criticism of the device has been directed towards the frivolity of the 3D effect, which can be turned off if you really despise it.  If you take it out of the equation, its really just a DS with more horsepower, which they could have released and called it a DS2 and people probably wouldnt have made a stink.


The Launch Lineup


Pretty weak overall.  There are a few solid third party offerings, but nothing thats really a system seller, and all the heavy hitting 1st-party titles didnt make release.  My favorite is likely to be a bit of a sleeper hit, Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars.  Its kinda like Advance Wars or Fire Emblem - turn-based, grid based tactical warfare with some light RPG elements.  Im a sucker for those kinds of games and this one is competently done.  And while its pretty much a top-down perspective, the 3D actually works really well with this one, creating the sensation that youre peering through a window into a tiny diorama.  Itll hold me over until the inevitable Advance Wars: 3D at any rate.


Worrying Facts


I think the biggest issue the 3DS is going to face this year is its $ 250 MSRP.  The DS has never been a state-of-the-art beast, but its also never carried a state-of-the-art price tag, which is partly why everyone under the age of 12 has one.  To get the millions of players who already have a DS to upgrade at almost double the price is a tall order.  It also has miserably poor battery life, clocking in at around 3 hours in my experience.  And while its graphical horsepower is a generational leap over the old DS, so is an etch-a-sketch.  Its 2011 guys.  An iPod Touch demolishes the 3DS in terms of sheer hardware capability, with an ever growing lineup of inexpensive, occasionally awesome games (*cough* Battleheart *cough*).  And it manages this with a lower price, more than twice the battery life, while also being the best music player on the market, a pretty decent camera, a video calling device... etc. etc.  I mean, I grew up on Nintendo games, and a totally buy into the belief that theres more to hardware than just "specs"... but this is getting pretty damn ridiculous.


Verdict


Dont buy one unless youre a gamer with disposable income who must have everything.  Otherwise, wait until the inevitable "3DS lite".

CRC Kosher Guide (v. 1.0.7) by Rocketouch, LLC

Cost: Free
Overview: There was really no difficulty choosing the Top Pick for this category.  This app does more than many of the other listed here -- combined.  (And its free.) Its a must-have for any kosher consumer with an Android device. (Even so, there are some improvements that can be made.)

+Recommended kosher symbols list shows symbols and name in one list simultaneously
+Includes detail about each organization including address, tell, and rav hamachshir (rabbi in charge) upon touch
+Search feature is comprehensive throughout application
+Includes direct links to YouTube videos by the CRC on kashering kitchens and checking lettuce for bugs
+Not in any way limited to Chicago
+Even includes a Starbucks category, which tells you which products are alright at full service vs. kiosk locations and in some cases how to order a particular product so that its not contaminated
+Has instructions for checking various vegetables
+Has liquor list, and even an OTC medications list

-Some reliable local kosher hashgachos may be missing from recommended kosher supervision list
-Share feature only shows whats literally on that very screen, which may not include enough information about that item
-Formatting errors in text are annoying (Q and A not separated properly; Hi-ASCII text appears where there should be "quotes" or apostrophes. 
-When looking up an item that appears in more than one category, one is often referred to the main category for that item. However, there is no hyperlink, and one must manually back out and find the item again a different way

+Allows one to look up any OK supervised food item by company name (through index or search)

-The links that do work from the "info" button take you to non mobile-friendly websites and even links to iOS apps instead of their Android equivalents!
-Search feature does not allow product look-up, only company or category look-up
-App limited specifically to OK supervised companies and provides no additional information of any kind. 
-Does not include OK certified establishments (such as restaurants)
-Does not fill screen on our test phone

                                     

 OU Kosher (v. 1.32) by Orthodox Union Digital Media

Overview: This limited app does one thing and does it pretty well.  You can look up any OU certified product by company name in either the "All" or "Passover" subcategories.  It will list any supervised items and their status (dairy/pareve) and also its passover status.

+Newly certified feature
+Cosmetically appealing app overall

-Problems with apostrophes displayed in text as a Hi-ASCII character.
-Link to "oukosher.org" is a not a mobile-friendly site
-Kosher Alerts does not alert you unless you go and manually check.  Should have option to receive the KosherAlerts as a notification for those that desire. 
-Does not include OU certified establishments (such as restaurants)
                                     

Kosher Recipe Feed (v. 2.2) by GizmoPress

Type: Application
Cost: Free (Ad Supported)
Overview: This unique app aggregates recipes and general "food-talk" from assorted kosher blogs and websites.

 +Very easy to use and has pictures showing the recipe at hand and links to more information if needed

+Updated relatively frequently

-Links to sites that are often not mobile friendly and require much zooming to be practical.

Overall: Could be good in a pinch, can be somewhat impractical on small devices for regular use

                                     

MK Kosher (v. 1.0) by Jewish Community Council of Montreal

Type: Application
Cost: Free
Overview: Contains index of products and establishments under the supervision of Montreal-based "MK Kosher"

+Useful Passover list shows which items require special passover supervision in one color-coded list

-Contrary to claims that the "MK Kosher Guide" has long been a reference for consumers across Canada and the US, the app is almost entirely focused on Montreal
-"Snap it!" feature unexplained.  A response from the organization stated that it takes a photo of  an  item so you can send it to them as an e-mail attachment.  This was tested, but doesnt allow phones built-in focusing or other photo-features to work.
                                     

Kosher Simbols [SIC] (v. 1.0) by Vielmassociates Ltd

Cost: Free
Overview: Kosher Simbols [SIC], is a simple app that shows a text list of just a handful (15 to be exact) of the 1500 or so kosher supervision agencies.

-Does not fill our screen
-Does not show symbols until one already knows the name of the supervising agency. 
-Offers no additional information besides the name of the Rav Hamachshir and the symbol of most (but not all) organizations in the list after a touch.
-Its stated mission is to show trustworthy hashgachos, but some key ones are missing
                                     

Kosher Spirit  (v. 1.0) by OK Kosher

 

Type: Application
Cost: Free
Overview: This is the Android app for the Kosher Spirit magazine, put out by the OK Labs, one of the largest kosher supervising agencies in the world. 

+The app is well designed for excellent magazine reading on the device
+Includes easy zoom features and nice page-turning and page jumping features

-Shows only an out-of-date issue.  This product is not kept up-to-date
-App frequently has a minor crash upon exit
                                     

OK Vegetable Checking Guide (v. 1.0) by OK Kosher


Type: Application
Cost: Free
Overview: This app shows, in written form, how to check most vegetables for tolaim (bugs, worms and other forbidden creepy things)

+From a trusted source, the OK Labs, one of the largest kosher supervisors in the world
+Contains pictures and, in some cases, diagrams of how to check the item
-No search feature -- index only
-Does not fill screen
-Text of actual instructions is somewhat fuzzy, as if its a scan from a book
-Does not allow for zooming in to make text bigger

Final thought: This is one of those apps that really could be much better, but one needs to have in their arsenal in any event.
                                     

OKF (v. 2.85) by OrderingApps

 Type: Application
Cost: Free
Overview: This store-specific app allows one to order food from two different establishments in Oakland, California


+App uses "OrderingApps™" a solid platform used by many other establishments
+Solid design and well-thought-out ordering options (all sorts of sandwich toppings are each chosen as an option)

Disclaimer: We didnt actually order anything to fully test the product, due to the great distance between the establishments and our test-site.
                                     

Fins & Scales (v. 2.0.0) by Anthony Angel


Type: Application
Cost: Free
Overview: This unique app allows one to search for a fish type and see if it is a kosher species or not

+Shows fish in two categories as list and allows for search as well
+Excellent FAQ (written by Orthodox Union) sums up relevant kosher fish laws and how one should conduct oneself if they need to purchase fish in a place that doesnt sell exclusively kosher fish

-No source given for list of approved fish

Final thought: Its worth downloading this app for the OU FAQ alone. There one can see that finding out if a particular fish is kosher is not always as simple as knowing its name.  The laws are more complex and there are actual tests one can perform themselves (or watch being performed) to see if the the scales qualify as "kaskeses" according to Jewish law.  This is all described in some detail in the FAQ and is worth reading and having on ones phone in a pinch.

                                     

Milk or Meat (v. 1.3) by Kwazi

Type: Application

Overview: We know we use the word "unique" very often, but this app definitely deserves that title.  A quick setup and a quick click and one has kept track of when they last ate fleishigs (meat or basar) for the purposes of waiting until milchigs (dairy or chalav).  A notification sounds when time is up.

+Shows a small icon in the notification area at the top of the screen with a red "meat" indicator the whole time one is waiting until they can eat "milk"
+Allows one to set custom waiting times for both meat to milk or milk to meat
+Easy to use and it works

-Milk to meat time, while customizable, defaults to 30 minutes.  We dont know a halachic source for actually waiting time from eating milk to meat, but there is a source for waiting from hard cheese (defined differently by various poskim, but generally held to be cheese thats aged for more than six months such as Parmesan).  In such cases, one must wait the full length of time they wait for meat, which is often six hours. This "30 minute" default could be confusing. 

Recommendation: Include a brief overview of laws of waiting from meat to milk and vice versa

+Has links to Wickipedia to further research what an ingredient is comprised of (on the chemical level) and what its used for

-Shows symbols for each ingredient "Vegan, Kosher, Halal" but the Kosher indicator is extremely inaccurate.  Shows some items that are almost always non-kosher as "kosher" and also shows other items that are sometimes kosher (with proper supervision" as "kosher." 

Verdict:  As a way to find out if an ingredient is kosher, this app is useless. One who is just curious what certain ingredients are, can find this app quite interesting

Note:  It would appear that this list is meant for the Israel market and it is not known that the medications listed as acceptable in Israel will necessarily be acceptable in the U.S. or other countries

Overview: This paid app includes over 100 Jewish-style recipes.

Final analysis:  Recipes are simple and to the point.  There are no pictures or any distractions.  App was a keeper at the end of the day.

Final analysis:  There is little here that isnt available for free in the cRc app above -- and they even have international hashgachos as well.  It would have been better to show everything in one long list like the cRc app
